GBC Motorsports’ Dustin Nelson Takes 1st In Opening Rounds Of LOORRS
- Updated: March 25, 2015
GBC Motorsports racers headed to Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park this past weekend for the opening round of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series. GBC took the first place spot in Friday and Saturday’s races in the competitive SR1 class.
Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series Round 1&2
March 20-21 | Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park
GBC Motorsports backed racer Dustin Nelson came home with hardware this weekend after the 1st and 2nd rounds of the SR1 Championship Series. On night one Dustin was able to to clench the pole qualifying spot with a best lap time of 53.416 seconds. This prime starting position, paired with his impressive skills behind the wheel of his Yamaha Motor USA/Weller Racing SR1 car, enabled him to clench the 1st place trophy. This is the first time he had driven this car which in fact it was delivered to him at the race. Due to past experience with other tires on SR1 cars, he chose to use the GBC Motorsports Dirt Tamers for the first night. Fellow GBC racer Brandon Kilgore put up the third best qualifying time, but unfortunately suffered a crash in practice. Kilgore overcame the damages to his car to claim 9th place in the opening round.
In a very similar fashion to Friday night, Dustin came back to put the GBC Motorsports equipped car right back on the podium. In an attempt to get a different slide pattern in the car, he switched over to the GBC Motorsports Mongrel. A slightly higher lap time yielded him a second place standing in qualifying, right behind the Optima Batteries car piloted by Corry Weller. Starting one car back when the green flag dropped did not hurt him one bit, as he went on to take the 1st place spot for a second time that weekend. “The Mongrels provided the perfect slide pattern, this was the most hooked (to the track) I’ve ever been,” Nelson said. “Once I got in the lead I pretty much checked out. I think I was up by 8 seconds at one point.” Brandon Kilgore finished in 4th place, just 3.074 seconds behind Nelson in a much tighter race.
QuadX & UTV Racing Series Round 2
March 21 | Glen Helen Raceway
Not only did GBC Motorsports see podium at Lake Elsinore this weekend, but we were also very well represented at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, CA for the second round of the 2015 QuadX & UTV Racing Series.
UTV Sportsman
In the UTV Sportsman class, Larry Heidler was able to grab the checkered flag in his GBC Motorsports equipped Polaris RZR. In the first moto he piloted his way to a 2nd place finish, but once he got used to the course it was game over. Larry raced his way to a 1st place finish in the second moto for an overall 1st place finish, netting himself 25 points on the series.
Seniors All
Bill Markel put in work aboard his GBC Motorsports equipped Yamaha in the Senior All class out at Glen Helen this past weekend. In the first moto he grabbed a 3rd place position, only to trump that in the second moto. Finishing moto 2 in the first place spot, he clenched the overall 1st position, gaining 25 points.
450 Production Expert
In a similar fashion, we saw GBC Motorsports racer Brian Sirevaag strut his stuff in the 450 Production Expert class. In Moto 1, he managed to keep the throttle pinned and clench a 1st place finish. As for Moto 2, slightly lower lap times earned him a 2nd place finish. Overall, Brian was able to grab himself a 2nd place position aboard his GBC Motorsports equipped Honda and gain 22 points on the series.
Open Pro
GBC Motorsports’ very own Kory Ellis managed to snag a top 5 spot in the Open Pro class. In the first moto and second motos he was able to finish with a 5th and 7th place respectively, netting him a 5th place overall finish and 17 points.
450 Production Intermediate
Craig Bennett ran a very similar course piloting his GBC Motorsports equipped Suzuki to a 5th place finish in the first moto and a 7th place finish in the second moto. Overall, Craig was able to clutch a 5th place finish yielding him 17 points in the 450 Production Intermediate class.
