Polaris® BRUTUS® Boosts Operation of Pond Hockey Tournament

brutushpdttrn14Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) and its Newport, N.Y., dealer Moody’s Polaris donated four BRUTUS® HDPTO commercial utility vehicles for the 10th-annual Lake Placid, N.Y., CAN/AM Adult Pond Hockey Tournament held Jan. 24 – 26. The donation saved the organization more than $10,000 in rental costs.

For 11 days leading up to and during the tournament, workers used the BRUTUS HDPTO vehicles to clear off snow-covered ice and maintain 23 outdoor rinks that spanned four acres across Mirror Lake. The units were also used to help create a skating path around the lake’s perimeter for local families and vacationers.

brutusreshe14The BRUTUS HDPTO is one of four models available in the BRUTUS line, Polaris’ first purpose-built commercial utility vehicles, and provides users with a full, front end power take-off (PTO) system with controls at their fingertips. The HDPTO is capable of operating three hydraulically-powered attachments – snow blade, pallet forks, materials bucket – and three PTO-powered attachments – snow blower, angle broom and finishing mower – to allow users to be more productive with less equipment.

“This was our largest event ever with 77 teams, but we didn’t need to add more staff thanks to the donation of BRUTUS HDPTO units,” CAN/AM Hockey Director Eric Chapman said. “Using the angle broom and snow blade attachments with the vehicles made it easy to groom 23 outdoor rinks in record time. Plus, the heated cabs helped work continue in temperatures as cold as -18 degrees, and even doubled as warming stations for staff throughout the tournament.”

brutushdb14CAN/AM also used the vehicles to haul equipment, both in the pallet-sized rear cargo box, which has a 1,250-pound capacity, and behind the vehicle with 2,000-pound towing capacity. By hooking up a trailer to the BRUTUS HDPTO, CAN/AM was able to efficiently and safely haul tournament gear on the ice including 46 hockey nets and benches for teams and spectators.

“Polaris is a company that values the great outdoors, so naturally we jumped at the opportunity to help CAN/AM Hockey,” said Aaron Stegemann, Polaris business development manager of ORV adjacent markets. “Our RANGER and Sportsman lines have long been known for their recreation and work performance, and now commercial users can rely on the versatility, capability and comfort of BRUTUS to tackle the toughest of jobsite tasks.”

Introducing Terra-Torque-Drive, an Electric UTV by EV Drive

EVDrive-4-e-motor-AWD-conversion-Frt_left-P1020454[1]EVDrive completed development and demonstrated a powersports industry first, an “electric 4-wheel 4-electric-motor torque vectoring technology” called Terra-Torque-Drive™, specifically geared to 4-wheel off-road powersports vehicles, such as for the rapidly growing market segment of side by side Ultimate Terrain Vehicles or UTVs. After taking recent demo rides in the EVDrive-UTV tech demonstrator, powersports industry insiders, such as UTV OEM reps and UTV racers enthusiastically agree, that the Terra-Torque-Drive™, technology would beat almost all of today’s top “gas/mechanical powered” 4wd UTVs. OEMs now have the opportunity to license this unique technology for integration into their own future powersports side by side UTV vehicle offerings.

Approximately 323,000 UTVs were retailed in North America in 2012, according to Power Products Marketing (PPM), a market research firm. PPM found consumer models (for example: Polaris RZR XP900) accounted for around 35% of total sales; Prosumer models (example: Deere XUV825i) garnered around 55% share, and commercial models (example: Bobcat Toolcat) were responsible for about 5% of sales. Industry insiders concur that the new EVDrive technology could apply to all 3 market segments. Compared to the top UTVs sold today, a Terra-Torque-Drive™, powered UTV with EVDrive Range Extender (REX) installed would excel in these areas:

1 – Highest efficiency 4wd drivetrain on any UTV today (least mechanical losses)

2 – Adjustable hill descent control (accomplished via an “electric engine braking” called “regen” putting energy back into the vehicles battery system from each of the 4 wheels)

3 – Dynamic torque vectoring modes both for high and low speed operation, e.g. industry unique “Zero Radius Turning” and high speed active torque vectoring allows for better and safer handling off-road

4 – Torque and power from -100 to +100% can be dynamically sent to any wheel, in either direction, in any combination, at any time.

5 – True Series hybrid with optimized internal combustion engine powered REX to allow for longer range matching or exceeding gas powered UTVs sold today. (REX is a high voltage specialized generator- LPG, gas or diesel powered REX engine easily adaptable, no mechanical connections to vehicle)

6 – 120vac power from onboard battery pack, backed up with the REX for general utility use

7 – Lower cost to maintain and operate – superior fuel economy, estimated average 50-100% better – for short trips, no fuel may be needed at all – plug-in to standard electric car chargers.

8 – Superior straight-line and rough loose material, curvy trail acceleration

9 – Greater river depth traversal possible due to completely sealed liquid cooled e-motors/power electronics.

10 – Stealthy low noise operation in electric only mode e.g. wildlife observation & hunting

11 – Torque vectoring software platform allows new traction capabilities to be supported like “apps” without costly mechanical NRE expenses to the OEM – OEM can provide customers software updates for new capabilities.

EVDrive-4-e-motor-AWD-conversion-naked-P1040387[1]EVDrive chose the 4-seat Kawasaki Teryx4 as a tech demonstration platform because of its short wheelbase, smaller turning radius, and large break over angle to minimize getting hung up on obstacles. EVDrive modified this UTV with complete removal of the gas engine and AWD mechanical drivetrain and replaced with a 160hp peak total version of the Terra-Torque-Drive™. Unlike the stock Kawasaki Teryx4 UTV mechanical AWD drive, no additional mechanical losses are incurred in the Terra-Torque-Drive™, regardless of AWD mode from lack of transmission, driveshafts and differentials. “Off-road UTVs are ideally suited to our torque vectoring technology where only single fixed speed reduction is required per motor-wheel to attain 55-75mph top-speeds with the type of high RPM brushless motor technology we employ,” said COO, co-founder, Steve Tice.

EVDrive-4-e-motor-AWD-conversion-naked-P1040385[1]The Terra-Torque-Drive™, is a customized version of the general and modular EVDrive-Train architecture (http://bit.ly/EVD-Arch) used on all EVDrive conversion projects, with an in-house developed scale-able torque vector software platform added running on the EVDrive VCU (vehicle control unit), which supports new traction modes with inputs from all driver controls plus vehicle sensors such as accelerometers, etc. Some planned traction modes, that go beyond what is currently running on the demonstrator: auto dynamic terrain type posi-traction control, variable inclination angle offset descent control, zero radius turns on incline, emergency 4-wheel panic braking/stop & boulder climbing.

The Terra-Torque-Drive™, powered e-UTV demonstrator uses 4 of the sealed liquid-cooled EVDrive EVD35 35kW/47HP peak drive sub-systems, de-tuned to ~30kW/40HP each or delivering a total of ~160HP/120kW peak. At each motor shaft, ~66 ft-lbs peak torque is delivered. The 4 gearboxes allow ratio changes with off-the-shelf gearsets. With the currently installed single speed gearsets, at the CV joint of each wheel, a whopping 726 ft-lbs peak torque is delivered. This is the kind of torque necessary to perform Zero Radius Turns with a fully loaded vehicle and perhaps even some extreme rock climbing. “With these gearsets, a top speed of 45mph is achieved with acceleration to this speed of less than 4 seconds if you get good traction – at zero speed all 4 wheels will break loose on dry asphalt!” said EVDrive’s CTO & co-founder, Bob Simpson.

EVDrive-4-e-motor-AWD-conversion-rear[1]In the accompanying video to this press release, some of the e-UTV tech demonstrator more technical features are revealed, such as: control touch screen for the Terra-Torque-Drive, specifically the interface to the in-house developed VCU, shown in accompanying picture links below, and optional engine sound synthesis unit some OEMs expressed interest in, with 2 sounds demonstrated in the video, a gas turbine and V-twin motorcycle sound.

Addition of the15kW REX not only gives the UTV full performance and range to match and exceed top UTVs on the market but also offers a feature the competition does not, that is 120vac of electrical power anywhere you need it. “With the REX sub-system part of the Terra-Torque-Drive™, a hybrid UTV can be a true swiss-army-knife UTV, able to deliver power in remote locations for construction/utility/ranch applications, run silent for hunting/wildlife observation & with full-time 4wd torque vectoring, can deliver off-road handling and performance for sports/recreation, in summary, addressing all needs in the consumer, prosumer and commercial markets,” said CEO, Steve Tice.

EVDrive-4-e-motor-AWD-conversion-VCU-Display[1]Similar to our 25kW REX technology installed in our Series-PHEV BMW325 tech testbed -> http://bit.ly/PHEV-BMW-3-series but smaller, our custom high voltage 15kW-single cylinder (ICE) powered REX for the UTV is located between the rear seats – so with this sub-system, competing against top 4-seat UTVs in range will not be a problem – certainly the performance meets and beats stock UTVs we have tested” said EVDrive’s CTO Bob Simpson. The REX gas engine can be modified to run on LPG as well offering additional emissions and operational cost advantages. EVDrive’s REX technology supporting the hybrid e-UTV development has been already designed & proven in EVDrive Series PHEV BMW 325i Technology Testbed here shown sealed below rear spare tire floor – no protrusion above stock floor as shown in pictures at link included above.

Digital or Electronic Differential” – Another benefit of the EVDrive torque vectoring technology platform is that the “Terra Torque Drive™ also supports “half the system” applications, making it a 2 wheel front or rear digital or electronic differential – with all of the potential torque vectoring functionality OEMs may want to match and exceed mechanical counterparts (diff lock, posi-traction, stability control, etc.) – with lower parasitic losses and software upgrade capabilities”

EV West is partnering with EVDrive to deploy and demonstrate Terra-Digital-Torque-Steer all-wheel torque vectoring technology on full-size off-road vehicles.  EV West is known for many milestones; e.g. Builders and drivers of the record breaking all-electric BMW 3-series street sedan at the Pikes Peak International Hill climb and builders of first ever electric off-road race car to run the Baja Mexican 1000 race in the National Off Road Racing Association’s series. About EVDrive Inc.
EVDrive is a design, engineering, systems integrator and low volume manufacturing firm that develops both hybrid and electric only powertrains for new or conversion of existing vehicles which yield “no operational or performance compromises” when compared to their internal combustion engine designs. It has been developing its own systems, components and software, and focuses primarily on high performance electric drive systems in support of OEMs, commercial fleets and vehicle conversion companies. EVDrive-Train is an in-house developed set of scale-able modules that makes up a vehicle powertrain. Besides the hybrid UTV, other vehicles demonstrate the versatility of the architecture. Series PHEV BMW E46 3-series tech demonstrator performs better than the original vehicle with over 10k miles of trouble-free operation. Not only is this hybrid e-BMW now higher performance in every way, it is also being primarily fueled by sunlight, truly Net-Zero on energy. On the EVDrive R&D lab/shop, a 5.6kW rooftop mounted and grid tied solar array delivers 17k miles worth of e-BMW driving energy annually in the Portland Oregon area. There is a full range of 35HP to 800+HP EVDrive-Train models -> http://bit.ly/EVDrives using different technology motor cores to suit the specific electric power needs of commercial fleet and consumer 2-4 wheeled vehicles. Another EVDrive-Train application is a specific conversion kit designed and installed in ENSI -> http://www.ensindustrial.ca/ mid-size Toyota Commercial Mining Pickup Truck Chassis. For commercial fleets, EVDrive’s Smart-Boost-Battery and Smart-Boost-Traction upgrades are under $20k installed, they lower cost of operations by 10-40% and have short ROI for fleet owners – 2 city transit fleets have been testing these systems w/ fuel usage reductions up to 17% recorded to date. Using a 65HP version of the EVDrive-Train family, EVDrive has also developed a motorcycle version of this powertrain technology for conversion of Honda CRF250R motocross bikes with no compromise in performance for use on real motocross tracks. This is the true enabler MX bike for Indoor/outdoor motocross parks in high density areas.

BJ Baldwin’s RZR 1000

Blingstar_monster_news2928 Motorsports, Blingstar Products and an array of elite Off-Road Companies teamed up to build the Monster Energy, BJ Baldwin, Polaris RZR 1000 for him to rip around the Mohave Desert in his local town of Las Vegas Nevada. Fresh off his epic come from behind 2013 Baja 1000 win, BJ now has some free time to show what this RZR 1000 is really made of. We are taking you behind the scenes and giving you details and photos from this build and why BJ chose these products.

Erik of 928 Powersports was the brain behind this custom build and he nailed it dead on. He installed the best of the best SXS products that this industry has to offer. He started this build off by installing one of his own custom fabricated 928 Roll Cages that is constructed of 0.95 DOM 1 3/4 inch tubing and a heavy duty 0.95 DOM front bumper. 928 Powersports not only does custom builds but they are also a recommended dealer for an array of off-road products such as Rigid Industries, King Shocks, Blingstar Products, HCR, Curtis Sparks and more. They are located in Mohave Valley, AZ and they are producing some of the sickest SXS builds you have ever seen.

Blingstar_monster_news5Blingstar Products is proud to announce that their new line of RZR 1000 accessories has created such a buzz that they were chosen to complete this bad to the bones SxS build for BJ Baldwin. The Blingstar Suicide Style Doors that are on this machine are crafted of 6061 aircraft grade aluminum, feature an integrated slam latch system and are made in the U.S.A. These are the same doors that are used on the Blingstar factory Polaris race team that withstand the harshest race conditions that desert & mx racing has to offer.

King Off-Road Racing Shocks has been a leader in off-road suspension for many years. Everyone one knows that BJ pushes his machines to the absolute limit and his dialed in King Shocks take all the abuse and provide him the most controlled ride possible. King provided their OEM replacement 2.5 internal bi-pass shocks, which uses a piggyback system in the front and a remote finned reservoir system in the rear.

Blingstar_monster_news3HCR hooked BJ up with an OEM stock suspension Kit. This kit features include: laser cut construction for precise fit and finish, a high clearance boxed front & rear arm design for added ground clearance and a 1″ longer wheelbase for better high-speed stability, hill climbing, and descents.

Curtis Sparks was called upon to add a few horsepower and to give BJ’s Polaris RZR 1000 a nice deep throttle sound. The Sparks Racing slip on exhaust system was installed, which is constructed of aluminum that features stainless steel components and finished off with a clean looking black powder coated sub-frame.

Rigid Industries is known to have some of the most durable, waterproof light bar applications in the off-road industry. Vision is everything, and when BJ likes to mob through the desert at night, the path that he’s about to shred to pieces needs to have light projected at extreme distances. Their E series 40” Combo bar was installed on the roof that offers a 10° spot pattern and a 20° flood pattern. Erik at 928 Powersports also added two Q4 lights to the front bumper and four A Series lights to illuminate the under body in a trick looking Monster Green.

Blingstar_monster_news4Polaris Industries stepped up huge and made this entire build possible by dropping off a new 2014 RZR 1000 for 928 Powersports to trick out. Polaris continues to dominate the UTV market by winning every major off-road race from the Baja 1000 to the WORCS series and even setting the longest UTV jump in the world, which is why Polaris stays five steps ahead of the competition, year in and year out.

The 2014 Polaris RZR 1000 is powered by an all new PROSTAR 107 hp motor with standout features like the 16” of suspension travel in the front and 18” of travel in the rear. Other noticeable features include an On Demand All Wheel Drive System, an 18’ turning radius and a 90” wheelbase.

Blingstar’s Clint Roberts Top Ten at WORCS Season Opener

blingstarwrcs-2014-Round1-351The Blingstar/Polaris Race team headed to Honolulu Hills in Taft, California this past weekend for the WORCS Racing Season Opener. The rough track proved to be very challenging for both drivers and their machines. A combination of dust, mud, huge jumps and squared off edges littered the grueling course. Despite the rough conditions, Blingstar’s Clint Roberts finished the four-lap race in ninth place in his new Polaris RZR XP 1000.

“The track was fast and the motocross section had some pretty big hits and you had to be on your game to keep up with the pace for sure. There weren’t a whole lot of places to pass,” stated Clint Roberts

With the New Year, the WORCS Racing Series chose to even the odds and draw for starting position for the opening round. Roberts started on the third row in the SXS Pro Class with 31 total entries. Roberts got a decent start off the line in fourth place around the first turn and made the quick pass for third place in his row. Like many, Roberts soon began to feel out the rough track and ran into an issue on the second lap.

“I was fourth in the first turn and was running third in my row for the first lap. On the second lap I ended up rolling on my side for a minute or so. After the second lap, my stock shocks began to get a little hot and I was blowing right through my travel. I saw a lot of people breaking; there were a lot of cars pulled over to the side. I went into the mentality to get through the first round and to finish top ten and then re-group for the second round,” explained Clint Roberts.

For 2014, Roberts has made the switch from a Polaris RZR XP 900 to the new Polaris RZR XP 1000. The Polaris RZR XP 1000 has raised the bar even further for the industry and it makes a perfect platform for racing even in stock from.

“Polaris did such a great job with the RZR XP 1000 this year. We are trying to keep the car as stock as possible. My DWT tires and wheels hooked up great on the rough track at Honolulu Hills. We have made a few changes to strengthen it a little bit.” Stated Team Owner and Driver Clint Roberts

The team has turned to JRi Shocks and is pumped to run their state of the art set up for the 2014 race season. Tony Cuva over at JRi has been awesome to work with and will be offering trackside support through out the year for all their racers. JRi brings their knowledge and technology from the NASCAR industry and I’m confident they will make a huge impression in the SXS industry for many years to come. The Blingstar/Polaris team will be running the new Lonestar Radius Rods at the next round as well to increase durability, and to improve suspension travel and handling.

blingstarwrcs2014-Round1-354The team consists of 3 SXS’s this year. Two of which will be racing the WORCS and BITD series and the 3rd car will be racing the GNCC series out on the East Coast.

Blingstar believes in racing the same exact products that they sell to the public. With that said, their production slam latch doors, bumpers, roll cages, harnesses and pro latch system is exactly what is used on their race version Polaris XP 1000; all of which can be purchased from dealers and distributors worldwide.

Robert’s teammate, Nick Nelson unfortunately experienced some mechanical issues during practice on Friday. Unable to fix the issue before the race on Saturday, Nelson was forced to sit out round one and prepare his SXS for the next round.

The Blingstar Team will be back in action February 7-9th at the Buffalo Bill’s Resort & Casino in Primm, NV for the second round of the WORCS Racing Series. The race will be exciting as both Nelson and Roberts will have their Polaris RZR’s dialed in and will be battling for the number one position.
