Polaris Refines RZR Line for 2013

Each year, the entire SXS industry waits in great anticipation of what Polaris is going to do with their model-year release. In recent years, there has been no shortage of market-leading vehicles delivered each year by Polaris. The 2013 RZR line sees the most major improvements, across the line, of any of the previous years. Read on to learn the details.

Perhaps the most underestimated vehicle in the RZR family, this model receives a new limited edition model for 2013, “Trail Limited Edition”, which sees major improvements:

  • Electronic Power Steering (EPS)
  • Engine Braking System (EBS)
    • EBS is accomplished with a drive and driven clutch configuration that maintains tension on the CVT drive belt keeping the engine coupled to the drive wheels which slows the vehicle down when going down hills.  In contrast, a non-EBS clutch system allows the engine to decouple from the engine when the throttle is released and then engine RPM returns to idle.
  • Versatrack Turf Mode
    • Turf Mode can be enabled with the switch on the dash at any vehicle speed but there is an electronic control that will not allow the differential to lock or unlock until the wheel speed drops below 15mph.
    • Turf Mode utilizes a solenoid that moves a pin that either allows the rear gearcase to drive just one wheel in a traditional differential mode, or when engaged, locks both the right and left hand wheels together.
    • Upgrading a base model 570 to have turf mode would be cost prohibitive and is not recommended.
  • Glove Box
  • Under hood access panel and dry storage case
  • New black plastic with orange and white graphics
  • Flow-through seatbelt tongue for easy adjustment

The 2013 RZR 570 is available in the following models:

  • Trail Limited Edition
  • Standard Polaris red

The vehicle that single-handedly birthed the sport UTV market, the RZR 800 is once again refined on its path to becoming the ultimate all-around sport UTV.

  • Dual-rate shock springs to increase ground clearance and suspension performance
  • Driven clutch that reduces decelaration noise.
    • The back angle of the driven clutch helix has been improved. The new helix angle prevents upshift of the driven clutch during a deceleration that was responsible for the shuffle noise.
  • Engine Braking System (EBS) on all Electronic Power Steering (EPS) units
    • Engine Braking is accomplished with a drive and driven clutch configuration that maintains tension on the CVT drive belt keeping the engine coupled to the drive wheels which slows the vehicle down when going down hills.  In contrast, a non-EBS clutch system allows the engine to decouple from the engine when the throttle is released and then engine RPM returns to idle.
  • Flow-through seatbelt tongue for easy adjustment

For 2013, the RZR 800 is available in the following models:

  • Nuclear Sunset Limited Edition
  • Sunset Red Limited Edition
  • Blue Fire EPS
  • Polaris Pursuit Camo
  • Standard Polaris Red

The undisputed king of sport UTV’s sees major improvements for 2013 that will surely increase its grip on the sport UTV market.

  • Larger 300 lb Rear Lock&Ride® cargo bed with built-in rack extenders and flat bed
  • Flow-through seatbelt tongue for easy adjustment
  • Easier shifting out of park – Three changes were made to the transmission to improve shift effort:
    • Added a bushing to the shift fork to reduce friction.
    • Added a roller on end of the detent pawl to ease movement between gears.
    • Lowered the peaks on the star detent wheel to reduce force needed between gears.
  • Wet sump engine oiling system – Polaris chose the new wet sump system over the previous dry sump system for the following reasons:
    • Removal of the oil reservoir allowed for the removal of the housing and access cover over the oil reservoir in the rear cargo bed. This resulted in a flat cargo bed that makes it much easier for a consumer to load a large cooler or other gear for their day of riding.
    • Wet sump engines are easier to maintain with only one point where the oil must be drained from the oil pan under the engine vs. a dry sump where oil must be drained from both the reservoir and the engine case.
    • Relocating the oil storage location from the higher mounted reservoir to directly under the engine (without changing the elevation of the engine) has a small but positive impact on lowering the center of gravity of the engine.

With the new wet sump system, the overall engine oil capacity does not change. A new engine oil pan has been designed to accommodate the storage of oil below the engine. The engine position does not change within the chassis.

The 2013 RZR XP 900 (2 Seat) is available in the following models:

  • Stealth Black/Evasive Green Limited Edition
  • Orange Madness/Blue EPS Limited Edition
  • Black/White Walker Evans EPS Limited Edition
  • Standard Polaris Red

Model Year Summary

In today’s turbulent economy, at a time when many manufacturers are releasing “bold new graphics”, Polaris has once again gambled big by making some major changes (wet sump on the XP, EBS, Turf Mode) to their product line. Based on the track record of recent Polaris vehicles, these changes are sure to help them increase their already impressive market share. It makes me proud to see an American company excel in an industry so heavily influenced by international manufacturers.

We look forward to getting our hands on the new 2013 vehicles.
