ECORS Round 1 – The Flats

ecors_001_312The 2012 ECORS series began this year in Marion, NC at a private park called “The Flats”, just off of Interstate 40.

The racer turnout this year was great, and up quite a bit from last year. For 2012, the UTV class will be racing on the track alone. Last year, we shared the track with the A-Class, which is a full size vehicle class, dominated by Jeep Cherokees. As expected, it was tough for both classes to be on course with the other due to the large speed difference. We’re excited about having the course all to ourselves this year.

During the night, Friday night, rain drenched the red-clay based course, creating a sloppy mess for the start of the UTV race. A good portion of the race course is situated on the side of a large hill, so the slippery conditions would make for some tricky sections with off camber, slick turns. It was sure to be an exciting and technical race.
The green flag flew at around 8:30 AM for the UTV race. I started on the second row. It took me most of the first lap to work into the course lead. After that, I battled lapped riders and the slippery course lap after lap. My fastest lap was on lap 7, as the course matured and traction emerged through the mud. The Octane Race Team/Blue Torch Fab Polaris RZR-XP 900 took first place and the fast lap.
ecors_002_312I ended the day with a lead of over 2 minutes and the fastest lap. It was a good day for myself and everyone involved with our race team this year. We are looking forward to defending our ECORS title in 2012.

Rob and Ron at ECORS are among the best race promoters I have ever worked with. Their passion for the racers and spectators is immediately evident when you get to one of their races, and I am very excited for Round 2, which will be held in Auburn, AL (very close to home).
